Music Players

Music players are the widest and oldest way of sharing music through just the sound to the ear, but also technically, through copying music. In this lesson today we analyzed the history and development of these players form the 1870s through to the present day.

1870s
Gramophone
=
Music distribution began here with the birth of the vinyls

1963
Casette
=
replaced the LP

-'Boom Box' + cassette 'Walkman' were the first form of file sharing
= no longer needed producers
-pop music became even more popular

1982
CD
-developed by Sony and Phillips
-same release date as Sony's Billy Joel's 52nd street + the first Cd Player
-this was a prime example of Vertical Intergration
-However it decreased in sales when Mp3s came in.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evolution of Music Players

Transistor Radio
-1954
-Similar design to iPod

Boom Box
-1970
-Associated with the Ghetto culture AKA Ghetto Blaster

Walkman
-1980s
-Tape Walkman designed and created by Sony was a devise that aloud you to carry around the one song that was on your Cassette tape
-Cd Walkman was the same principal just for a Cd instead

Mp3 Player
-1998
-Saehan's Mp Man f10

iPod
-2001
-Apple's most bought product
-The best selling music player ever

When studying the history and evolution of music players, we can see as technology has developed, the lifetime for a product has decreased...

Boy Better Know

(due to lack of information on 369 recordings, i am now researching boy better know)

Boy Better Know:

Was founded by the UK grime artist Skepta (Joseph Adenuga Jr.) from Tottenham, however the group was also formed by JME (Jamie Adenuga) Skepta's younger brother.
In doing this, it was a way for independent artists to receive 100% profits of record sales. Boy Better Know is mainly associated with grime music collective Roll Deep.
The label produced records from various artists including Wiley, ERS MAN and Kieran.

Main Artists involved

Skepta
JME
Tinchy Stryder
Wiley
Jay Sean

What kind of Music do Boy Better Know Produce?
The particular genre of this label is Grime (despite it officially being registered as indie as it is independent), as the two artists who founded the label are from the UK Grime scene themselves. However because of the artists involved with the label are now collaborating with other artists from other genre's -e.g Tinchy Stryder (A Grime artist) resonantly done the single "Take me back" with Taio Cruz who is evidently, due to his tracks, more of a classic R&B slow jam artist.

What Strategies do Boy Better Know use to promote?
The most common technique Boy Better Know use to publicise their name is (in songs alone) to have a standard "Boy Better Know" chat at the beginning and end of their tracks.
The other technique used it combined with a marketing technique used, this is having the name on T-shirts and Sweats in music videos, as it not only allows the viewer to see that the particular song is produced by them, it also allows fans of the song to get involved with the "cult status" created.

Other strategies used are mainly on web + web 2.0

-e.g myspace- http://www.myspace.com/jmeserious
-http://www.myspace.com/boybetterknow

-http://www.last.fm/music/JME/_/Boy+Better+Know

Merchandise
Merchandise is also on the web
-http://www.2-funky.co.uk/genre/Merchandise/Clothing/B

Advertising
The Advertising strategies are different to other labels as not only do they use Myspace, Youtube is a major player in this particular labels growth as the audience they are appealing to are the most common users of this site

Place In The Industry.
Boy Better knows' place in the industry has started to increase with the burst of music that has hit the UK in the last year, however comparing them to the big four, they would still be considered as a small independent Label. However this is mainly because of both the small amount of investment, and also the size of the audience...

Audience.
The audience for this particular label is defiantly niche and exclusive as there is such a small number of people listening and involved in the UK grime scene compared to the bigger labels, however it is growing due to the increase in technology and also talent.

The main audience comes from the more run down areas of big cities, London, Manchester, Birmingham because the artists involved are from the same areas themselves; and also a small percentage of the audience are from all social backgrounds. Mainly because they enjoy the music but also those who "think their bad".

Distribution
Boy Better Knows music is sold in:
iTunes store,
Cd stores (HMV),
and also online stores e.g-http://www.ukrecordshop.com/category/boy-better-know/

Relationship between Boy Better Know and music industry.
  • Despite being independent, they do rely on the music industry's patterns and changes
  • They have not needed to adapt to the web phase of advertising and distributing as they were almost immediately in this situation
  • However it is hard to say whether or not Boy Better Know are in competition with the big 4 as, they do have a very niche audience which means the top 4 have not needed to get involved with the UK grime scene, however, due to the collaborations between grime artists and others, including Calvin Harris, Daniel Merryweather, Taio Cruz, Craig David etc, the labels that own these artists are bigger and will be in slight competition with them.

2/3/09 lesson on music industry

Significant Factors:

Production:
  • Advance in technology
  • User-based production
  • no reliance on record company
  • musical expertise not needed e.g garageband + logic
  • loop based software. Evident in manufactured pop artists
  • cost no longer an issue-prosumer software (pro-consumer)

Distribution:
  • Internet = primary medium, use of web 2.0
  • can be 'free'
  • Making physical formats obsolete (tapes, CDs) will be fazed out
  • industry forced to think of new ways of marketing, in keeping with interactive nature of distributors
Consumption:
  • follows trend of using new media technologies e.g youtube
  • linked to image more explicitly through visual media e.g MTV/Base
The Big 4
  • Sony
  • Warner Brother
  • Universal
  • EMI
Stafford: "The Music industry can be defined as the organisation of the various activities associated with performing and recording music and distributing access to those performances around the world. Because the basis of music production is accessible to everyone with a modicum of talent, the industry is both more 'open' than filmmaking and less easily 'controllable' than traditional broadcast television. This has led to a longstanding institutional difference between small and 'independent' music organisations and a large corporate mainstream".

Music Industry and tech
  • Development of Music Industry id linked to the development of techology
Vertical Integration
the process in which several steps in the production and/or distribution of a product or service are controlled by a single company or entity in order to increase that companies or entities power in the market place. e.g Apple> iTunes, iPod, iMac, iMovie
  • this blurs the lines between P, D, C
Synergy
This is two companies working together to create a product that benefits both of the companies e.g Apple and 02 to create the iPhone

my chosen artist.

Jay-Z
  • AKA Shawn Corey Carter
  • born December 4, 1969
  • He is the former CEO of Def Jam Recordings and Roc-A-Fella Records.
  • He co-owns The 40/40 Club and the New Jersey Nets

jay has sold over 26 million units in the United States. His critically acclaimed album, The Blueprint, was written in only two days. After announcing his retirement from recording music in 2003, he returned in late 2006 with the album Kingdom Come, which sold 680,000 copies in its first week, Jay-Z's highest-selling album in a one-week period. MTV named him number one on their list of the greatest MCs of all time. The New York Times announced in April of 2008 that Jay-Z is on the verge of a partnership with Live Nation for $150 million — among the most expensive contracts ever awarded to a musician. Carter married BeyoncĂ© Knowles on April 4, 2008.

Genre: hip-hop/rap

Target audience: mainly boys but some girls ranging form 11-20,and from lower-working class backgrounds, who enjoy hip-hop, however his name was chanted by "glastonbury" fans typically more "indie" at the 08 glastonbury festival.

Marketing: Jay was signed by Russell Simmons (brother of Run DMC's REV RUN) founder of Run DMC, to "Def jam records" and was later made CEO, he then went through the same journey with "Roc-A-fella records" which means "to roc a fella" and also "roc" meaning diamond. Jay is now partnering with "Live Nation" calling his half "Roc Nation" however under contract has to finish his final album first.
"Roc Nation" will be a record label, talent/management agency, and music publishing company.

Where is his music sold: Jay's albums are sold in almost if not all, music and record shops, and iTunes for download.

Image: baggy clothing for casual, suits for smart. (roc-A-wear is his own clothing line)
